<h3>Johnny Cake</h3>
<p>Given that my grandfather died when Mom was 9 (around the time her brother Gordon died) I suspect that Johnny Cake was a common food due to low cost. These are the things that make memories &#8230;</p>
<ul>
<li>2 cups corn meal</li>
<li>1 cup flour</li>
<li>1-1/2 cups sour milk (see below)</li>
<li>2 Tbsp shortening</li>
<li>2 tsp baking soda</li>
</ul>
<p>Mix all ingredients well. Place in greased 9&#215;13 cake pan and bake at 350 F. It is done when a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.</p>
<p>Note: To make sour milk, add 1 Tbsp vinegar to each cup of milk.</p>
